Japan - Nearby Items Locator
Heading 5
This description got a bit wordy, but this little utility may be of some help and is a lot less complicated than all the words might indicate. I wrote it almost four years ago but forgot about it. It enables you to find up to 20 places within a specified radius that match criteria you set up.

Choose the icon on the top left of the page for Tokyo, center for Osaka and right for Kyoto. If you like the Tokyo page it is easy to make ones for Osaka and Kyoto. Each page will place you at a central location within that city. Once on the page, you will see 4 boxes for you to use in your search. Running from left to right on a desktop, or top to bottom on mobile, those boxes are as follows. A selection box where you can choose the type of establishment you want to locate, for instance bookstores or restaurants. The second box is optional but into it you can enter a keyword to narrow your search. For instance, if in the first box you chose Restaurants, you can use the keyword box to look for "French". If you leave the first box blank, you can type anything in this second box and get a match. For instance, leave the first box blank, type "McDonalds" into the second box and, voila. The next box requires you to enter a number that will be used as a radius in miles or kilometers to limit your search. Tip - in a big city, because there are so many places, you may want to enter decimal values to shrink that radius down. If the default central location, ie Tokyo Station, is not where you want to base your search from, the fourth box is a drop-down with pre-selected locations of interest throughout the city. After filling in these boxes, tap "Search", and your chosen location will be indicated with a centered yellow and orange flag, and you will see up to 20 items that match your criteria. If the pre-selected locations don't give you enough choice, there is an additional box into which you can enter a place name or a specific address. As you type into that field, the field will help you out with some suggestions as you type.
Tap any of the location indicator bubbles and a box will display with the name of the establishment, the address and a Google Maps link. Not sure if it is something I can fix but the Google Maps link is a bit tricky til you get the hang of it. On my desktop, when I left click it, it goes to a "blocked page" message. Right click it and it gives me the option to open up the link in a new tab. A similar problem on mobile. If I tap the link, it gets lost, but if I press and hold the link for a second or so, and then choose either "Open in new tab" or "Preview Page" the link opens.

Options - Tap the options button and you will be able to choose what type of map to display. You can also indicate that you would like a list of the matching locations to be displayed, that you would prefer locations that are closed to be omitted and whether you will allow a radial offset. Radial offset shifts the location markers a bit if they are too close together.
Finally, in the lower part of the map you will see a 'click nav' checkbox and a find me button. If 'click nav' is selected, tapping anywhere on the map will recenter the map and refresh your search using that location as the center of the search. The 'Find Me' should work if you have your browser set to allow you to be located. If it works it should find your current location and center the map on that location. Once done with a search, click anywhere on the title text to reveal the search boxes and start anew.

Note - while this utility is customized for Japan, nothing prevents you from typing in any location or any address in the world. Type your home address and it will work just as described above for Jersey City.
